Biolitec AG will finalized integration of biolitec pharma Ltd., Scotland within short time – launch of Foscan® started successfully with first sales

Turnover of first quarter 2002/2003 by Euro 4.5 million on same level as previous year – Integration of biolitec pharma will be finalized in 2nd quarter – promising start with head and neck cancer therapeutic pharmaceutical Foscan®

Jena, Germany December 02 , 2002 – During the first quarter of fiscal year 2002/2003 Biolitec AG achieved a turnover of Euro 4.5 millions, and could reach the figures of the same period 2001/2002 in spite of the difficult market situation. Sales declines in North America have been more than counterbalanced in Europe and Asia. As consequence of doubled expenditure in research and development as well as in sales and marketing compared to the same period last fiscal year, the operating loss amounts to Euro 0.6 million (previous year Euro 0.3 million). The result before income tax was - 0.5 million. Net income per share of Euro -0.07 (previous year Euro 0.04) was obtained.

biolitec achieved first sales with Foscan®, which is approved in Europe for the treatment head and neck cancer. According to the targeted marketing activities a positive trend in the application of Foscan® is already recognizable. The restructuring and integration of biolitec pharma Ltd. was finalized widely. biolitec pharma relocated to a research park of University of Edinburgh, which should influence research activities positively and enhance productivity of the 100-percent biolitec-subsidiary. The research activities were intensified, for example expanding the application spectrum of the PDT pharmaceutical Foscan®. As a result expenditure in research and development increased to Euro 1.4 millions, the R&D charge accounted for 32 percent of turnover.

„We will focus our efforts and resources on the market introduction and expansion of indications for the use of Foscan®”, said Dr. Neuberger, CEO of Biolitec AG.

Also very promising is the ELVeS™ vein treatment, which continuously grew following the global market launch. AngioDynamics, biolitec’s partner in USA, started a marketing campaign for ELVeS™ vein treatment system in November. As a result of these activities biolitec AG is anticipating further sales in the US.
